The Monday Night Upshot League

The CDGC is pleased to present to you the first ever Upshot League! The purpose of this league is to provide players an opportunity to learn about and practice their upshots in a fun, educational way - with a touch of competition :)

The Quick and Dirty Explanation

  • When: Monday nights 7pm start, starting July 5th , running until September 6th (10 week league)

  • Where: rotating location, sometimes Edgemont, sometimes Big Marlborough, Highfield Regenerative Farm, and possibly other locations.

  • Who: You! Meant for players with somewhat okay throws for both forehand and backhand, but not for competitive ringers (if you've played in MA1 or any Pro division in a tournament, this isn't for you)

  • Cost: $50 fee, must be a CDGC Member (fee includes a mid-range disc for keeps).  If and when Highfield is ready, participants will also be asked to obtain a $10 membership to the farm.

  • Competition: handicap scoring (like Tues league), mini-tournament at end, scoring based on 5 shots from each of 10 marker locations to one or several target locations; proximity to target determines points

  • Limited Space!  Capped at 40 people, e-transfer to Mike Potter (docpiddy@gmail.com) prior to commencement, first come first served

  • Learn Something!  Each session starts with short educational session from ‘pros’ about specific upshot elements (e.g. flex shots, playing a hill, etc)

  • Need additional info - email Mike Potter (docpiddy@gmail.com) or Trevor Livingstone (livingstone.trev@gmail.com), we’re more than happy to help!

The Long and Clean Explanation

The Upshot League is an opportunity for you to come and work on the part of your game between teeshots and putts. Each session will start with a short educational session on a specific upshot topic, with time for quick demo and practice of what you’ve learned.

This will be followed by a fun competitive game where you and your card rotate from station to station and make a series of 5 upshots to targets. Scoring will be determined based on the proximity of each upshot to the target.  Scoring will also be adjusted based on your individual handicap, determined via a running average of your scores from your previous sessions.

Currently we’ll be running sessions at a combination of Edgemont and Big Marlborough course areas, but may add some other locations as necessary. We are excited at the prospect of holding a few sessions at the Highfield Regenerative Farm, which is planned to be the home of a new 9-hole course in southeast Calgary. If and when Highfield is ready to use, league members will be asked to purchase a $10 membership to the farm. This membership will allow participants to play disc golf on the property outside of league time, along with the other benefits of membership to the farm. If Highfield is not ready in time for league use then this additional $10 will not be required.

The league is intended to be educational and fun, and to give you a chance to practice and refine your skills. It’s geared towards players that are starting to get out of the beginner phase, or already an intermediate player. Ideally you already have a workable forehand and backhand throw. High level amateur players and pro-tier players need not apply, as we’re really trying aiming for newer players trying to improve their skills.

Your league fees include a free mid-range disc (approx. $20 value) courtesy of DiscFlow (https://www.discflow.ca/). Some league fees will also go towards league and mini-tournament prizes, and a nominal amount for supplies and material. All of your instructors are volunteering their time. The balance of league fees will go back into CDGC to support the development of new or existing courses.
