ABOUT the Challenge!

Welcome to the Registration sign-up for the 2021 Bonavista Junior Disc Golf Challenge by the Calgary Disc Golf Club (CDGC) and presented by DiscFlow.ca!

NOTE: This event has been changed from the original posting due to COVID-19 restrictions and other organizational challenges. Thank you for your understanding.

This Challenge is the Calgary Disc Golf Club’s kick-start for the JUNIOR disc golf season for under age 18 youth. It’s about fun and growing the disc golf community. Those new to the sport are welcome too!

The location is the Bonavista Downs Disc Golf Course. We will use the existing 9 baskets and each child will play two rounds of 9 holes. Beginners will be instructed to use shorter alternate tee locations marked with orange flags.

Due to current Alberta Health Services COVID-19 restrictions, pairing up with friends is now prohibited, players will be organized by household. Experienced CDGC players will be on site to cheer kids on and assist with play (in a socially distanced fashion).

Bring at least one disc! If you are a beginner, any conventional 'frisbee' style disc will do. Typically as people get better they specialize into disc golf discs. So don't worry!

What is the challenge at Bonavista? The course is exposed to wind and there is not much shelter from the sun (bring sunscreen). Dress for the weather. Bring water and a few snacks.

There is a parking lot by the baseball diamond.

CHANGE! - A portable toilet might not be available. Apologies - prepare ahead of time.

NEW PLAYERS! - See our video 'A Junior Disc Golf Survival Guide.'

Note - if you click the link and do not have Facebook, a huge pop-up to sign in may come up, just click 'Not Now' in the bottom right corner of the pop-up and you can continue watching the video.

More About Format

More details about start times and how to report in your child's score will be emailed out in the days leading up to the Challenge.

Player Pack / Prizes

Please note, due to unforeseen issues, some elements of our player packs may need to be distributed after the Bonavista Challenge is over - thank you for understanding.  Ah, but they will include:

  • DiscFlow.ca coupon code valid until the end of June for 25% off your next order.
  • 1 Innova Mikani beginner disc via Frisbee Rob (frisbeerob.com), so please invite out all of your friends' kids and grow the sport! Here is the description for the Mikani: Say Aloha to the Makani. Makani is Hawaiian for "great wind". The Makani is designed to ride the breeze and land where you throw it. The Makani will make you better at throwing flying discs in general. Low weight and clean true flight dynamics will develop your throwing form. Makani is perfect for fun casual play. But versatility is the Makani’s middle name. Play catch, Ultimate, and even disc golf with this versatile flyer.  The discs are provided with grant support from Parks Foundation Calgary / City of Calgary.
  • 1 Calgary Junior Disc Golf Club sticker!
  • 1 mini soap bar from Bowness Soapworks, which is run by fellow local disc golfer Melba Seto. Melba does league play and occasional tournaments, supporting the disc golf community as much as she can. She makes custom labelled soaps for all events so please think of her for your next event/gift! Melba says, "Stay clean! Play safe! Have fun!"
Prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place, plus bonus prizes provided by DiscFlow.ca. Wait, there is more!...one Innova Aviar disc signed by Frisbee Rob (frisbeerob.com) to give away!

Registration

When registering, you will be asked to list 1-2 of your child’s friends also participating in the event; however, as indicated above, due to current restrictions we are unable to match up friends. Still, feel free to list friends as we can try to schedule the start times in succession. Registrants with a current CDGC membership will be identified.

The Parent or Legal Guardian registering the child must agree to the RELEASE OF LIABILITY, ASSUMPTION OF RISK AND MEDIA RELEASE AGREEMENT in order for the child to participate in the Challenge. This is done through the Registration form.

Player Safety

Please go over safety with your child, as with every sport! Issues include, but are not limited to: getting hit by a disc, slips, trips, falls, the effect of pre-existing medical conditions and inclement weather.

Please also see the ‘Disc Golfer’s Code’ - www.pdga.com/code

At this difficult time, we are working diligently to keep your safety and the safety of the community as a whole a top priority. Please follow the rules outlined as strictly as possible to help this a success! Be advised that all social distancing measures as outlined on the Government of Alberta website must be adhered to at all times. See below for details:
https://www.alberta.ca/enhanced-public-health-measures.aspx

We intend on enforcing these rules with volunteers and participants to keep everyone safe and happy! Please be aware that we may also be subject to cancellation due to COVID-19 and refunds will be processed accordingly.

What’s Next

Watch for a few emails. Tee times will be assigned a few days before the tournament in set intervals to ensure there are not too many people gathered at the same time. Please do not arrive more than 20 minutes before the assigned tee time to keep large groups to a minimum. Once done, report in your child’s score. After reporting in the score, please do not congregate so as to help us comply with Alberta Health guidelines.

We hope to keep the event safe, inclusive and fun for all those involved! Thank you for your part in making this happen. See you out there on the course!
